GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Packers defense will lose a key member on and off the field this upcoming season with the release of cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday morning.
Alexander was a first-round pick for the Packers in 2018 and had 12 interceptions in 78 games played in the Green and Gold.
Fans at Lambeau Field on Monday had mixed emotions about the two-time Pro Bowler.
“In those moments when you needed a big play, like it was him,” said Becca and Scott Bernacki, fans from Chicago, Illinois. “He provided energy and momentum to the defense, hopefully they replace that spark.”
It will be the first season without Alexander on the roster since 2018, but fans believe there should be no reason to worry about the season ahead.
“He’s a good player. Unfortunately, he’s been hurt three out of the past four seasons,” Green Bay native Tim Tennant said. “They just haven’t gotten the productivity out of him.”
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst, in a press release, said, “His contributions to our organization were felt on the field, in the locker room, and in our community, and he will be missed. We appreciate all he gave and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
The Packers will prepare for mandatory minicamp, starting June 9 and running through June 12, with training camp to follow.
