FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – A 13-year-old from Fond du Lac had to be flown to a trauma center after a crash with a vehicle at the intersection of Pioneer Road on Friday afternoon.
According to the Fond du Lac Police Department, officers were called to the East Pioneer Road and Martin Avenue intersection around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6, for reports of a vehicle and bicycle crash.
Officers say their preliminary investigation indicated that a 13-year-old Fond du Lac boy was riding his bike westbound on the sidewalk. Witnesses stated that the traffic light for northbound and southbound lanes had turned green.
Two dead, one hospitalized after crash in Shawano County
As a van began to continue north after the green light, officers stated that is when the boy crashed into the front passenger side of the van.
The teenager suffered ‘significant trauma’ to one of his legs and had to be flown by a ThedaStar medical helicopter to a trauma center. Officers noted that his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Our hearts go out to the young boy and his family, and we are hopeful for a full recovery. As summer begins and more children are outside riding bikes, this is a powerful reminder for parents to review safety rules with their kids, including wearing a helmet, walking bikes across busy streets, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing, to name a few.
